For a manufacturer which has survived two world wars, a cold war, and lived through the period of many US Presidents, doing a review without being biased in favor of it, is a feat that we have attempted, hopefully, with good measure. So, how did they perform under our scrutiny, just read on to find out!
Who They Are
Converse is one of the oldest athletic shoe makers still functional today. It sells three major brands All Star, Cons, and Jack Purcell. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, they are currently owned by Nike, Inc. With revenues in billions of USD, they are one of the most recognized sports shoe brand alongside Nike, Adidas, and Reebok. Of course, since their start they have diversified into other fields and now feature Apparel as well.
Converse was founded back in 1908 by Marquis Mills Converse. He named the company after himself. However, despite being found in 1908, they did not see any major successes until 1917, when they launched their first Converse All Star Basketball Shoes. After that, it was a series of successes right up until their difficulties in the 90s and the subsequent bankruptcy in 2001.
One of their oldest and most famous lines: Classic Chuck, named after Charles H. Chuck Taylor was launched in 1932. As the story goes, Taylor came to their shop once complaining about sore feet from using their product. From the conversation that issued, he was offered a job in promoting their shoes, which he accepted. He became a salesman and an ambassador for their line of athletic footwear. This is a job that he continued to work with until before his death in 1969. The line still continues to this day and is one of their most popular ones.
They were also the official shoe sponsors of National Basketball Association, for a long time. But, eventually, with the launch of Nike, Adidas, and Puma in the 70s, their popularity waned leading to their ouster from the esteemed position. Nevertheless, they survived until the 90s, when the depression, along with their waning sales and rising debts forced them to file for bankruptcy. They were pulled out by some investors and eventually bought out by Nike in 2003. Since, then there has been a revival of one of the oldest sports brands of America, leading to revenues exceeding $2 billion USD mark.

The website offers a mesmerizing design, which is very easy to navigate. The main categories are displayed at the top center of the page and include Women, Men, Kids, Customize, Explore, and Sale. Moving down, you will find a beautiful and extended display of their bestselling products and latest deals. At the bottom, you will get access to the regular company information, policies, and social media page links. The website employs a continuous loading system, which can be a bit frustrating when you want to look at the bottom for shipping and other policies.
Ease of Navigation
The website has a contrasting dark and white theme, which complements the colorful nature of their products. This makes the products stand out and easy to spot. Also, apart from their top tier classification, they have an innovative system of viewing the products. This system allows you to rearrange the main display according to your preferences according to gender, size, style, color, and sorting options including price, bestsellers, and most viewed.
But, if you would rather use their gender based classification at the top, then that is okay as well. The main categories are further divided into Shop By, Sneakers, Clothing, Collections, and Featured. There is another alternative to all these in the form of the site search feature, located at the top right corner of each page. Using this will reduce searching times if you are searching for a very specific product.
All in all, the website is well optimized for ease of navigation and has exceptional loading times. The content written is user-friendly and without any fluff, which makes it informative and concise.
As mentioned earlier, they have three major products featured on their ecommerce setup at the moment: Shoes, Clothing, and accessories. However, let us go through their major categories one by one.
They have a vast and diverse collection is athletic footwear for women. The categories include High Top, Low Top, Slip, Wedge, and Customize.
The high tops have some really creative designs. Of major interest among some of our staff was their Chuck Taylor All Star Iridescent Leather Fringe. Being part of their signature Iridescent Collection, it had the trustworthy zip for easy take off and on, along with fixed lace, which added to the fashion aesthetics of the whole construct. Other honorable mentions include Chuck Taylor All Star II and their Chuck Taylor All Star Andy Warhol Floral.
The low tops had a similar diversity in patterns. From plain whites to floral blues and pure black, they had everything in between the two extreme ranges of the rainbow. On the other hand, their collection of slip-on sneakers was not the largest one that we have seen. However, it was adequate. Their innovative wedge collection was a blast. Cleverly designed to conceal a wedge, it gives your height a boost, which can in turn make you more confident depending on your aspirations.
The Clothing Department had some simple yet chic designs, which could be paired with their footwear perfectly. But, in all honesty you would not be doing your regular shopping from converse stores.
The men’s sneakers had a good range and diversity in their collection as well. The main categories were High Top, Low Top, and Slip, which is exactly one less than the women. But, they seemed to have a bit more finesse in them. But, it all boils down to preferences in the end. They collection was vast enough to cater to the needs of almost everyone. From decidedly bizarre designs to the more routine ones, they have a comprehensive collection of footwear.
Our favorite was the Chuck Taylor All Star Converse Boot PC. Although, to most it would seem like a simple sneaker, but the comfort is just great and the design is sensible. Hence, the large number of votes for it. For low tops, it was the Cons CTAS Pro. Once again, it was the comfort which won us over. Otherwise, it does have a rubber infused canvas, a CONS traction rubber, and some added cushioning in the mix.
We are a big fan of slip-ons here at Rebateszone and their collection was adequate and would be okay for most people.
The Clothing had some really interesting flowery designs, along with the regular ones. It can be browsed to pair up with their shoes, but it is no American Eagle. Nevertheless, we loved their Camo Collection, which had some cool tees and jackets.
The Kids Section was likewise segregated according to their collections and gender. The designs there were smaller versions of the designs in their proper men and women collections. There was nothing overtly groundbreaking in the clothing section as well. This of course does not mean that their collections were found to be wanting, rather their similarity to the adults is a compliment to the collection as a whole.
This is a section which we believe gives them credible edge over other similar athletic footwear in the industry. Here you can select and choose to customize their products according to your satisfaction. The base materials will obviously stay the same; however, the degree of freedom given in all other aspects is amazing. Visually speaking, you can customize the sneakers to your heart’s content. You can choose the color of the body, laces, inner sole, the tongue, and many other portions of the sneakers. They also give you the option of adding a personalized inscription, which will appear on the side of your shoe.
We had some good fun with this tool and the color combinations possible are a blast. The end design can be saved in your profile and you can share it with your peers on social media. After you finalize the design, they will have the custom design made and you will have the product in a couple of weeks. They give you the option of customizing their whole range of products.
This category gives you access to some of their exclusive products and services. You will get access to their limited edition sneakers as well as their artist supporting program: Rubber Tracks. This is their venture to support upcoming artists of all genres by giving them access to their state of the art recording studio. The artist retains all the rights to his/her work. It is a commendable venture, which has benefited many upcoming artists.
Payments, Shipping, and Returns
The website is secure and accepts all major online payment methods including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, PayPal, and Converse Gift Cards.
You can order the products online and have them shipped to your address. Shipping is free on orders above $50, but you will have to look at the shipping policy for complete details. There are three options to choose from: Standard Shipping, UPS 2nd Day, and UPS Next Day Air Mail. They also offer international shipping, but once again we will refer you to their shipping policy section for details.
They operate a pretty standard “30 days from the time of receipt” Returns Policy. You can initiate the returns process by filling out the relevant form and following the steps mentioned in it.
Customer Service and Social Media
No business can survive without good customer service. They have an experienced customer service department which will help customers in choosing the right products and help in resolving issues related to their services. The online customer service can be reached via phone, email, and live chat.
Additionally, you can follow them via their social media pages on Google +, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Tumblr.
Converse operates a successful ecommerce business along with its more than 80 ground stores. And we feel that they are doing a good job when it comes to the ecommerce set up. The customer service is responsive, the designs are good, and the whole process is optimized for ease of use. All these qualities definitely make them stand amongst our A+ rated ecommerce businesses.
